May 10, 2023 - Columbus North and Westfield were both 11-8 entering Tuesday night’s non-conference baseball matchup, so an evenly-matched, competitive game was certainly expected. Through four and one-half innings and the scoreboard still reading 0-0, the fans were getting exactly what they expected. Then the Bull Dogs’ bats came to life in the bottom of the fifth inning and they exploded for seven runs in the inning, added three more in the sixth, and rolled to a 10-2 victory. Blake Osbourne was 3-for-3 from the plate for the Dogs, and North got two hits each from Tyler Blythe and Dillon James (including a double from James). Zach McLean got the start on the bump for Columbus North, scattering just four hits while striking out three. While he issued four walks for the game, his one earned run allowed sealed the victory for the Dogs, now 12-8. Ryan Rayburn came on in relief in the seventh inning, allowing one unearned run on one hit. In the JV game, the Dogs improved to 12-2 for the season after a 6-5 victory over the Shamrocks. The Dogs could only muster four hits, but took advantage of Westfield errors to come back from a 4-0 deficit after two innings. Brock Kintner threw seven innings, allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out five. Catcher Sam Perry threw out a pair of would-be base stealers for the game, while Macario Mendez scored two of the Bull Dogs’ six runs. The varsity team will travel to and the JV team will host Bloomington South on Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 at both locations.
