May 19, 2024 - Columbus North Athletics is proud to announce the Class of 2026 Josephine Armuth and Dr. Maurice McKain Mental Attitude Award winners, presented to a senior female (Armuth Award) and male (McKain Award) athlete who have demonstrated exemplary sportsmanship, mental attitude, and scholarship throughout their high school athletic careers at Columbus North High School. This year, the recipients are Miley McClellan and Sam Perry. McClellan finished a stellar basketball career being named First Team All-Conference, IGCSA 2nd-Team All-State, ABCA Senior All-State Honorable Mention, HBCA All-District, and participated in the Hoosier Basketball Magazine Senior Top-60 Workout. She was named All-Area by The Republic, and earned the team’s Karen McCaa Resilience Award. She served as team captain her senior year, and will continue her basketball career at Gannon University. McClellan was also an outstanding softball player for three years, earning a number of Conference Indiana, area, and team awards, before beginning a successful track and field season her senior year. She has competed in a number of sprint and high jump events this spring. Sam Perry was First Team All-Conference and named to the All-Region Team in football last fall. He was Academic All-State in football, a three-year varsity starter and letter winner, and three times was named to The Republic All-Area football team. He served as team captain and earned the team’s #ONE Award following both his junior and senior seasons, recognizing the Bull Dog that best demonstrates Ownership, Nobility, and Effort. Perry is currently in his third season as the starting varsity catcher on the baseball team. He was named First Team All-Conference as a sophomore, is a four-year letterwinner, was named Defensive MVP following his sophomore year, and has received the team’s Brad Everett Integrity Award the past two seasons. He has met the standards to be named Academic All-State for baseball later this spring. According to athletic director Brian Lewis, “These two recipients are high-character, multi-sport student athletes. They are hard working, never complain, and always put their teammates first. Miley and Sam have truly bought into the Bull Dog athletic culture that we seek to uphold in Columbus North Athletics.” Josephine Armuth was a longtime local educator who gave years of faithful service to Columbus High School. The award in her name has been presented since 1974. Dr. Maurice McKain was a local physician who served for many years as the team doctor and trainer for Columbus High School. This award has been presented since 1940. Nominations for both awards came from head coaches of all Columbus North varsity athletic teams.
