May 15, 2026 - Columbus North baseball got home runs from Sam Perry and Jack Whaley and an inside the park grand slam from Cade Finke to earn their first Conference Indiana victory of the season, 12-3 over Southport on Thursday evening. Finke busted open a 3-2 ball game in the top of the fourth inning with a bases loaded line drive that the Cardinal center fielder dove and missed, causing the ball to roll all the way to the wall. Finke cleared the bases and hustled all the way home for a grand slam, giving the Dogs an 8-2 lead. Sam Perry hit a solo home run in the fifth, and Whaley added a two-run shot in the sixth, helping the Dogs roll to a conference road victory. Brock Kintner was 3-for-4, Macario Mendez scored three times, and Whaley and Finke each tallied four RBI for the Dogs. Franko Ortega earned the victory on the mound with a complete game six hitter. Ortega allowed three runs, while striking out nine and walking just one. 65 of Ortega’s 95 pitches were strikes. The JV team lost at home to Columbus East Thursday night to fall to 2-10 for the season. North varsity will host Terre Haute South this evening at 6:30 pm and will have area youth players as their guests for Youth Night. All area baseball players wearing their team jerseys will be admitted free and receive a box of popcorn from the concession stand.
