Columbus North boys place fourth, girls fifth in cross country semi-state; both teams qualify for state meet

                NASHVILLE, Ind. – Senior Charlie Allen and junior Sam Horak each placed in the top 25 individually Saturday (Oct. 21) to lead the Columbus North boys cross country team to a fourth-place finish in the Brown County Semi-State and a berth in next week’s State Finals.

                Sisters Arig and Aric Tong went led the Bull Dogs to a fifth-place effort in the girls’ semi-state, and they also earned a spot in the state meet that begins at 1 p.m. next Saturday (Oct. 28) at the LaVern Gibson Course in Terre Haute.

                In the semi-state, all seven CN boys turned in season bests as the Bull Dogs totaled 152 points. Bloomington South won the title with 86 points. Tell City was second with 122 points followed by Christian Academy of Indiana with 124 and Columbus North. Bloomington North and Jennings County claimed the last two spots for state with respective totals of 153 points and 158 points.

                Allen led the Columbus North group by covering the 5,000-meter course at Eagle Park in 15 minutes, 57.3 seconds for a 19th-place finish. Horak was 23rd in 16:03.5, while junior John Sluys finished 39th in 16:22.9, senior Drew Thompson placed 47th in 16:30.6 and junior Rishi Poludadu was 49th in 16:31.4.

                Seniors Peyton Shelton and Spencer Sherlock rounded out the CN lineup, Shelton placing 51st in 16:33.6 and Sherlock finishing 94th in 17:07.8.

                Christian Academy junior Caleb Futter won the race in 15:08.9, just 0.6 of a second better than Evansville Memorial senior Matthew Schadler. Edgewood junior Austin Haskett was third in 15:22.6 followed by Christian Academy senior Skylar Stidam in 15:30.4 and Evansville Central senior Evan Sorensen in 15:32.7.

                Bloomington South had seven runners in the top 30 to capture the team crown. Junior Ian Shaw led the Panthers by placing ninth in 15:39.7.

                In the girls’ race, senior Arig Tong led the Columbus North girls by placing 15th in a season-best 18:45.8 as the Bull Dogs amassed 153 points.

                Bloomington North, paced by individual champion Grace Williams in 17:53.0, claimed the team title with 63 points. Bloomington South was second with 76 points followed by Floyd Central with 102 points, Evansville Memorial with 144 points and Columbus North. Edgewood took the final spot for state with 178 points.

                Freshman Aric Tong provided support for the Bull Dogs by finishing 26th in a season-best 19:07.2. She was followed by freshman Mackenzie Barnett in 43rd in a season-best 19:35.9, sophomore Olivia Morlok in 49th in 19:45.6 and freshman Ella Anderson in 50th in a season-best 19:49.5.

                Also, junior Emma Smith placed 52nd in a season-best 19:53.0 and senior Kirsten Ballard was 67th in 20:14.2.

                Williams, a senior, was trailed by Edgewood freshman Annalyssa Crain in 17:59.3 for individual honors. Barr-Reeve senior Natalie Graber placed third in 17:59.8 followed by Bloomington South senior Toudora Galuska in 18:24.8 and Bloomington North sophomore Mya Hagerty in 18:30.9.

                The Columbus North boys advanced to the State Finals for the 11th consecutive season and the 27th time in program history. The CN girls also qualified for state for the 11th straight time and the 33rd time in program annals.
