COLUMBUS, Ind. – Junior Tanner Johnson scored two goals and senior Liz Tynan stopped a penalty kick on Thursday, lifting the Columbus North girls soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Center Grove in the semifinals of the Class 3A sectional hosted by Columbus East.
The Bull Dogs improved to 11-3-2 with the decision and earned a spot in the sectional final at 7 p.m. Saturday (Oct. 7) back at Richard Wigh Soccer Complex. There, CN will face Columbus East (11-5-2), a 4-0 winner over Franklin.
Johnson’s first goal came in the 27th minute when she found the net from about the 6-yard mark by finishing a serve by sophomore Caroline Hollenkamp on a free kick from about 45 yards out.
Late in the half, in the 38th minute, the Bull Dogs were called for a foul in the penalty box, resulting in a PK for the Trojans (11-5-3). Center Grove junior Megan Perry took the shot from the 12-yard spot, but Tynan dove to her left and corralled the attempt to allow Columbus North to retain the lead at intermission.
Johnson doubled her output in the 58th minute, putting a shot from about 28 yards out over Center Grove senior goalkeeper Ella Thompson and into the upper portion of the net.
Tynan finished with three saves in her shutout.
Columbus North is seeking its second straight sectional title and the program’s 15th overall since the IHSAA began overseeing girls soccer in 1994. Columbus East is chasing its fifth sectional title and first since 2015.
The sectional winner earns a spot in the Bloomington South Regional on Saturday, Oct. 14.
