Girls Varsity Soccer
COLUMBUS, Ind. – Junior Tanner Johnson snapped a tie in the 76th minute Wednesday (Sept. 6), lifting the Columbus North girls soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Southport at Richard Wigh Soccer Complex.
Johnson’s goal came off a feed from freshman Lauryn Whitley and lifted the Bull Dogs to 7-0-1 overall and 3-0-1 in Conference Indiana games. The Cardinals dropped to 5-3-2 overall and 1-1-1 in league contests.
Southport took a 1-0 lead when senior Jacqui Bell scored an unassisted goal in the game’s 17th minute.
CN tied the contest in the 32nd minute when sophomore Caroline Hollenkamp responded with her own unassisted tally. The game remained deadlocked until the Johnson found the net with less than five minutes to go.
Senior Liz Tynan played the entire game in goal for the Bull Dogs, and she made three saves. Senior Emily Chambers made nine saves in goal for Southport.
Freshman Helena Ho and sophomore Riley Stevens scored to lift CN to a 2-0 victory in the JV game. Sophomore Cailyn Goebel assisted on Stevens’ tally. Sophomore Kaylyn Bates made two saves in posting the shutout for the Bull Dogs (2-4-1).
Columbus North is off for a week before hosting Perry Meridian next Wednesday (Sept. 13) in another CI encounter. The JV game begins at 6 p.m., and the varsity follows about 7:30 p.m.
