Columbus North shoots 313 to win girls golf sectional; Nathaly Munnicha is medalist with a 75

GREENSBURG, Ind. – Freshman Nathaly Munnicha posted a 5-over-par 75 on Saturday (Sept. 16) to claim medalist honors and lead the Columbus North girls golf team to the championship of the Greensburg Sectional.

Senior Julia Luken placed second individually with a 78 and senior Danbi Kim tied for third with a 79 as the Bull Dogs managed a 313 total at Greensburg Country Club, 43 strokes better than both Greenburg and Columbus East.

Senior Molly Donnell carded an 81 and sophomore Annie Anderson shot an 84 for the Bull Dogs, who captured their fifth consecutive sectional championship and the program’s 21st overall. CN won despite the absence of junior Alexandria Munnicha, who did not play because of a blister on one of her hands.

Columbus North qualified for the Lapel Regional at 9 a.m. next Saturday (Sept. 23) at Edgewood Golf Course in Anderson.

“I had a rough front nine, shooting 5-over at that point,” Nathaly Munnicha said of her round over the par-70 layout, which matched her 18-hole season best on Aug. 19 in the Roncalli Invitational. “But the back nine, I shot par and tried to keep a positive outlook. That helped.”

One memorable hole for Munnicha was No. 7, where she was able to save par. She hit a 9-iron about 30 yards over the green on her second shot, but recovered on her third shot to chip to about 3 feet from the hole. She made the putt for par.

The day as a whole gave Munnicha a lift about herself and her team, where all five players were in the top eight of the sectional.

“Molly and Annie played well, so we’re happy with how things turned out for the team,” Munnicha said. “And my round brings me confidence that I can play well. I haven’t played my best lately, but this gives me confidence going to the regional.”

Greensburg and Columbus East also qualified as a team for the regional, the Pirates taking second place over the Olympians with a better fifth-player’s score. Those qualifying as individuals for the regional were Batesville’s Meredith McCreary with an 79, North Decatur’s Sidney Parmer with an 89 and Rushville’s Mady Carmony with a 91.

Columbus North is the defending regional champion and will be trying for the program’s seventh regional crown. The top three teams and the top five individuals not on those teams will earn a spot in the IHSAA girls golf State Finals on Sept. 29-30 at Prairie View Golf Club in Carmel.
