Columbus North girls golf wins Roncalli Invitational; Kim captures medalist honors with a 71

INDIANAPOLIS – Senior Danbi Kim fired a 1-under-par 71 on Saturday (Aug. 19) to claim medalist honors and lead the Columbus North girls golf to the championship of the Roncalli Invitational.

Freshman Nathaly Munnicha added a 75 and senior Julia Luken carded a 77 for the Bull Dogs, who amassed a season-best 303 to capture the team title over the 5,300-yard layout at Smock Golf Course. Junior Alexandria Munnicha shot an 80, and senior Molly Donnell completed the CN lineup with an 88.

In addition, sophomore Annie Anderson posted an 85 while playing as an individual.

“I am extremely happy for the girls,” said CN coach Scott Seavers, whose squad had been second in three invitational events earlier this season. “The girls played really well, and this should give them continued confidence that we can compete with the best teams in the state.”

The coach praised the Bull Dogs’ top four for their play.

“Danbi didn’t have the best start, but she battled back like she always does,” Seavers said. “She picked up some birdies and just grinds it out.

“Nathaly played great and was steady all day, while Julia had her second consecutive strong (18-hole) round. Alex was just shy of being in the 70s, and she is very close to being in the 70s consistently. We’re very pleased with their efforts.”

Zionsville, paced by a 74 from sophomore Annabelle Pancake, was the event runner-up in the 17-school field with a 304. The Eagles also had a 76 from Avery VonDielingen and a pair of 77s from Claire Edwards and Abby Thielbar.

Westfield placed third with a 307. Sophomore Jocelyn Bruch and senior Adrienne Montalone each shot a 75 to lead the Shamrocks. Their score also included a 77 from senior Cailyn Henderson and an 80 from senior Margaret Wentz.

“We knew Zionsville was good, but we saw that they are very good,” Seavers said. “Westfield also is very good, so we know we have to keep working on our game so we can be prepared at state tournament time.”

Carmel finished fourth with a 333 followed by Guerin Catholic at 342, Martinsville at 346, Plainfield at 354 and host Roncalli at 359.

Columbus North returns to action at 4:30 p.m. Monday (Aug. 21) when it hosts Bloomington North at Harrison Lake Country Club. The Bull Dogs follow by facing Seymour at 4:45 p.m. Tuesday (Aug. 22) at Shadowood Golf Course.
