Kim takes medalist honors as Bull Dogs place second in Fall Preview golf meet; Donnell wins Greensburg Invitational

CARMEL, Ind. – Senior Danbi Kim fired a 2-under-par 70 on Saturday (Aug. 5) to claim medalist honors and lead the Columbus North girls golf team to a runner-up finish in the Fall Preview Meet at Prairie View Golf Club.

Freshman Nathaly Munnicha added a 78 and junior Alexandria Munnicha carded an 80 for the Bull Dogs, who amassed a 310 total and finished one stroke behind Westfield for the team title.

Sophomore Annie Anderson contributed an 82 and senior Julia Luken had an 86 to round out the scoring for CN.

“I’m so happy for Danbi,” Columbus North coach Scott Seavers said. “She was on her game all day long. She played really smart and didn’t make any mistakes.”

The coach also was happy for his team, which placed second to Westfield for the second time in six days.

“These results should give us a lot of confidence,” Seavers said. “It shows we can compete with the best teams in the state. Hopefully get better and make a run at it at the end of the year. I’m confident but not overconfident. We have the potential to do something really cool if we keep it together and keep improving.”

Westfield had three players shoot in the 70s en route to its winning 309. Sophomore Jocelyn Bruch paced the Shamrocks with a 74. Seniors Cailyn Henderson, Adrienne Montalone and Margaret Wentz provided support with respective scores of 75, 77 and 83.

Zionsville placed third with a 313 followed by Evansville North at 321, Carmel at 324 and Fishers at 324 in the 18-school field playing on the course of the state meet. Homestead was seventh with a 335 with Lake Central at 336, Hamilton Southeastern at 343 and Penn at 348 rounding out the top 10.

Seavers praised several of the CN players.

“Danbi is a player who able to get out of trouble and still make par,” he said. “On No. 16, for example, she hit into a bunker, but managed a fabulous second shot and still made par. She gives herself chances and avoids the big number. She plays very steady and doesn’t get rattled."

Kim's effort was one stroke better than Lake Central's Alexis Miestowski. Penn's Lyvia Li and Evansville North's Hadley Walts shared third place with 73s, while Bruch placed fifth with her 74.

“Nathaly also was good all day, and I was glad to see in her in the 70s" Seavers said. "Alex was not at her best on front nine, but she did a good job on the back side. She is getting there. And I am extremely happy for Annie. This is the first time she’s ever played this course, and she played very well in competitive conditions.”

Senior Molly Donnell gave Columbus North two individual champions in one day as the Bull Dogs had a second group competing in the Greensburg Invitational at Greensburg Country Club, site of the sectional later in the season.

Donnell shot a 79 to claim top individual honors, leading the Bull Dogs to a sixth-place team finish with a 391 aggregate. Freshman Yestika Nischol added a 92 and sophomore Nicole Duncan contributed a 98. Freshman Anna Hatton tallied a 122 and freshman Paige Sherlock posted a 133 to complete the CN lineup.

Mooresville won the team title with a 356, two strokes better than Columbus East in the 17-school competition. Greensburg was third with a 372 followed by Greenfield-Central at 384, Franklin County at 386 and Columbus North.

Donnell’s round was four strokes better than Batesville’s Meredith McCreary and Columbus East’s Lily Shelp, who each carded an 83.

Columbus North returns to action at 4:30 p.m. Monday (Aug. 7) when it hosts Perry Meridian at Harrison Lake Country Club. The Bull Dogs follow by competing in the Fuzzy Zoeller Invitational at 2:30 p.m. next Saturday (Aug. 12) at Champions Pointe Golf Club.
