"We didn't start off with the energy we wanted, but the team did a really good job in Games 4 and 5 of staying poised and bringing energy when our backs were against the wall,” said assistant coach Andrea Behling, who is acting head coach with varsity coach Caitlin Greiner on bed rest while in the final weeks of her pregnancy.
“Southport is the type of team that doesn't go away, and it took a lot to fight through a tough five-set match. We had a few different girls step up at different times to give us the boost we needed late in the match.”
The Bull Dogs also swept the sub-varsity matches.
Junior Andrea Corbeels netted eight kills while sophomore Riley McGaha notched six as CN took a 25-13, 25-8 victory in the JV match. Junior Thais Oehninger recorded four aces, while sophomore Kate Whaley had 23 assists for the Bull Dogs (6-2). Whaley tallied eight digs, sophomore Lauren Opalka had seven digs, McGaha tallied six digs and Oehninger had five digs.
Emma Derringer and Alexa McKinley each produced five kills as Columbus North posted a 25-8, 25-15 triumph in the freshman match. Ava McKinney added six aces as the CN rookies improved to 3-4.
Columbus North returns to action at the varsity and JV levels on Saturday (Sept. 9) in the Jennings County Invitational. Both teams face Scottsburg at 9 a.m., Ben Davis at 10 a.m. and host Jennings County at 11 a.m.
All three CN teams play next Tuesday (Sept. 12) at Franklin Central. JV and freshman matches start at 6 p.m., and the varsity follows about 7 p.m.
