INDIANAPOLIS – Junior Agustina Fainguersch totaled 20 kills, two service aces and 14 digs over three matches Saturday (Sept. 2), helping the Columbus North volleyball team to a 1-2 effort and a third-place finish in the North Central Invitational.
The host Panthers beat the Bull Dogs in the first round 25-21, 25-20, and Park Tudor topped CN 25-19, 20-25, 15-10 in the second round. Columbus North defeated Connersville 25-10, 25-20 in the final round to move to 5-3 for the season.
“We had a slow start to the day, and we were unable to find our intensity,” CN coach Caitlin Greiner said. “North Central and Park Tudor put a lot of pressure on us offensively, and we could not come back at them and put a ball away.
“This being our first tournament of the season, we will have to learn to have a faster start and come ready to play.”
Sophomore Emma Tynan added 16 kills and one ace over the three matches, while senior Katie McAninch tallied 14 kills and two aces. Sophomore Gabby Genth provided eight kills and four blocks, while junior Lily Meyercord contributed 32 assists, one ace and five blocks.
Junior Sophie McKinney chipped in 13 assists and one ace, while junior Maddy Sebahar produced a team-best 32 digs and two aces.
North Central won the four-team round-robin competition with a 3-0 mark. Park Tudor was second at 2-1 followed by Columbus North at 1-2 and Connersville at 0-3.
Columbus North went 1-1 at the JV level. North Central edged the Bull Dogs 25-24, 23-25, 15-12, and CN beat Connersville 25-19, 25-16. For both matches, junior Andrea Corbeels tallied 11 kills while sophomore Riley McGaha notched nine kills and sophomore Lauren Opalka produced eight kills and 15 digs as the Bull Dogs moved to 5-2.
Sophomore Kate Whaley provided 34 assists, three aces, two blocks and nine digs, while sophomore Riley Eder notched eight blocks, junior Nadia Lomax tallied four blocks and freshman Madi Roop had two blocks. Also, junior Thais Oehninger produced 19 digs, sophomore Lydia Trimpe collected 11 digs and sophomore Jalynn Reardon had nine digs.
Columbus North returns to action on Tuesday (Sept. 5) when it visits Southport for a tripleheader. JV and freshman matches begin at 6 p.m., and the varsity follows about 7:30 p.m. in a Conference Indiana match.
