Olympians top Bull Dogs 44-37 in boys basketball

COLUMBUS, Ind. – Senior Thomas Myers scored 17 points including four free throws in the final 30 seconds Friday night (Dec. 15), leading the Columbus East boys basketball team to a 44-37 victory over Columbus North in the Orange Pit.

Senior Max Nolting added nine points and junior Matthew Frost provided eight points for the Olympians, who improved to 2-2.

Senior Jaylen Flemmons netted a game-high 22 points for the Bull Dogs (4-2), but the visitors were unable to get another consistent scoring threat. Senior Trey Vincent contributed six points and freshman Blake Barker had five points for CN.

Nolting scored all nine of his points in the first quarter as Columbus East jumped to a 17-9 lead. Flemmons had 13 in the first two quarters as CN cut the deficit to 22-19 at intermission. The Bull Dogs trailed just 26-25 at the third stop, but the Olympians – with Myers leading the way – outscored the visitors 18-12 over the final eight minutes.

Vincent had an apparent layin that could have made it 38-37 negated on a charging call with 1:09 to go. East junior Drew Johnson followed with one free throw and Myers then hit two freebies for a 41-35 lead with 30 seconds to go. Flemmons countered with a driving jumper, but Johnson sank one more free throw with 17 seconds left and Myers followed with two more free throws to account for the final.

Columbus North prevailed in both sub-varsity contests.

In the JV game, sophomore Casper Clark scored 17 points and classmate Nicholas Schiavello tallied 13 points as the Bull Dogs prevailed 57-54. Junior Riley Ables added 11 points and freshman Reese Harmon had seven points for CN (-0). Tyler Boyer netted 13 points and Beck Kelley scored 10 points to pace the Olympians.

At the freshman level, Blake Stevens scored 10 points – including four free throws during extra time – as Columbus North won 43-40 in two overtimes. Preston Terrell and Braden Taylor each provided nine points for the Bull Dogs (6-1). Elliot Koopman and Mark McDonald each scored seven points for Columbus East.

Columbus North returns to action on Saturday (Dec. 16) when it visits Terre Haute South for a Conference Indiana encounter. JV and freshman games begin at 6 p.m., and the varsity follows at about 7:30 p.m.
