Columbus North boys basketball falls 55-52 to Shelbyville in overtime; Bull Dogs finish season 10-14

ST. LEON, Ind. – Sophomore twins Cooper and Sam Lewis combined for seven 3-point goals en route to 28 points Friday night (March 4), leading the Shelbyville boys basketball team past Columbus North 55-52 in overtime in the semifinals of the East Central Sectional.

Cooper Lewis finished with 16 points and hit 5-of-9 3-pointers, while Sam Lewis netted 12 points and hit 2-of-5 from long range as the Golden Bears rallied from a 46-41 fourth-quarter deficit to prevail in the extra session.

Junior John Lux chipped in 10 points and freshman Zack Kuhn tallied eight points for Shelbyville (9-14), which earned a date in the sectional final at 7:30 p.m. Saturday (March 5) against Class 4A No. 10 Bloomington South (20-4). The Panthers escaped with a 40-37 victory over Bloomington North (8-15) in the first semifinal game.

Sophomore Jaylen Flemmons scored a game-high 19 points with eight rebounds for Columbus North, which saw its season conclude at 10-14. Junior Alex King contributed 16 points and a game-high 14 rebounds, while junior Nathan VanDeventer chipped in nine points and junior Ethan Mitchell had four points.

Flemmons converted a driving layup to give the Bull Dogs the five-point lead in the fourth quarter, but Shelbyville – behind a Cooper Lewis 3-pointer, two John Lux baskets and a Sam Lewis hoop – outscored CN 9-4 over the final 4:40 of regulation to force overtime.

A John Lux basket tied the game at 50 with just more than 30 seconds to go in regulation, and neither Flemmons nor King could convert for the Bull Dogs in the final 10 seconds of the fourth period.

Sam Lewis gave the Golden Bears a quick lead in overtime, but Flemmons tied the game with a layup. John Lux sank 1-of-2 free throws with 1:47 to go to give his team the lead for good, and Kuhn extended the margin to three with about 20 seconds showing when he made a shot after he rebounded a missed free throw.

The Bull Dogs had a chance to tie in the waning seconds of overtime, but VanDeventer was unable to convert a 3-point attempt as he came off a screen on an inbound play following a late timeout.

Columbus North jumped to an 18-5 lead late in the first quarter before Shelbyville countered with a 26-6 burst for a 31-24 lead at intermission. The Bull Dogs used a 12-2 surge to open the third quarter, regaining the lead at 36-33 on a Flemmons old-fashioned three-point play with 3:25 to go in the third quarter.

A King rebound basket made it 38-33, but Shelbyville closed the quarter with a John Lux 3-pointer and 1-of-2 Cooper Lewis free throws to trail 38-37 at the third stop.

CN freshman Trenton Kelley opened the final frame with a free throws and VanDeventer added a 3-pointer to give the Bull Dogs as 42-37 lead, but Sam Lewis made a steal and layup.  CN’s King and Shelbyville’s John Lux then traded baskets before Flemmons’ layup made it 46-41 to set the stage for the final four-plus minutes of regulation and overtime.
