CN's Thompson recognized as state's Gymnast of the Year at Indiana Sports Awards dinner

Columbus North sophomore Claire Thompson was named Indiana’s high school gymnast of the year on Thursday (April 28) at the Indiana Sports Awards dinner for high school athletes at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Thompson was an obvious choice for the award after she captured individual state titles in March on uneven parallel bars, balance beam and the all-around. Her efforts, combined with those of senior Katrina May and junior Ashley Holliday, helped the Bull Dogs to the team state championship.

Thompson posted an all-around score of 38.400 in winning the state crown. She had event scores of 9.700 on bars, 9.675 on beam, 9.500 on floor exercise and 9.525 on vault.

Anna Watkin of Owen Valley and Adi Minor of Columbus East were runners-up as gymnast of the year.

Former Columbus North boys basketball player Josh Speidel, a 2015 Indiana All-Star, also the presenter of the Courage Award during the event.

The first-time event honored numerous athletes in a variety of sports. The winners of the 2016 Mr. Basketball and Miss Basketball awards were announced – Kyle Guy of Lawrence Central and Jackie Young of Princeton, respectively.

The Male Athlete of the Year was wrestler Chad Red of New Palestine and the Young was honored as the Female Athlete of the Year. Carmel girls swimming was recognized as Team of the Year.

Also, Eric Moore, coach of Center Grove’s Class 6A state football champions, was cited as Coach of the Year in all sports.
