JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. – Senior Akshaya Sabapathy finished in fourth place at No. 3 singles on Saturday (Aug. 19), leading the effort by the Columbus North boys tennis team in the Jeffersonville Invitational.
Sabapathy went 2-1 for the event, winning twice Saturday after dropping his first-round match on Friday evening in the eight-team three-round competition.
Columbus North placed seventh as a team with other athletes placing fifth, sixth, sixth and seventh in their flights.
Guerin Catholic was the team champion with 28 points. Bloomington North totaled 27 points to finish as runner-up with Jasper and host Jeffersonville tied for third with 26 points apiece. Zionsville placed fifth with 21 points followed by Delta with 19, Columbus North with 17 and Evansville Memorial with 16.
Sabapathy defeated Delta’s Tanner Southerland 6-2, 6-3 and Evansville Memorial’s Ross Effinger 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 in his final two matches, while junior Kevin Lin, sophomore Joey Zhao and the tandem of senior Chris Ruble and sophomore Adam Saad all went 1-1 on Saturday.
Seniors Isaac Jackson and Ben Mathew went 0-2 at No. 1 doubles Saturday, but the duo managed the Bull Dogs’ only victory in the first round on Friday.

>> Lin beating Jasper senior Noah Mendel 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) but falling to Guerin Catholic junior Michael Wade 6-2, 6-1 for sixth place at No. 1 singles.
>> Zhao falling to Jeffersonville senior Jerid Inman 6-0, 6-2 but beating Delta junior Ben Bamidele 6-4, 6-3 for seventh place at No. 2 singles.
>> Jackson and Mathew falling to Jasper senior Noah Luebbehusen and junior Eli Franks 6-1, 7-6 (8-6) and to Delta juniors Tannon Dishman 6-1, 6-3 for fifth place at No. 1 doubles.
>> Ruble and Saad topping Evansville Memorial’s Dylan Klipsch and Max Haynie 6-2, 6-2 before falling to Delta sophomore Mason Knight and freshman Michael Curtis 3-6, 6-0, 7-5 for sixth place at No. 2 doubles.
Columbus North returns to action at 5 p.m. Monday (Aug. 21) when it visits Plainfield. The Bull Dogs follow by hosting rival Columbus East at 4 p.m. Tuesday (Aug. 22).
