JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. – Seniors Isaac Jackson and Ben Mathew prevailed at No. 1 doubles Friday evening (Aug. 18), but the captured the only Columbus North victory in the first round of the Jeffersonville Invitational.
Jackson and Mathew rallied past Bloomington North’s Samor Baugh and Jack Ruche 6-7 (6-8), 6-3, 6-4 to advance to the final four of their flight in the eight-team, three-round event.
Other teams in the event are Delta, Evansville Memorial, Guerin Catholic, Jasper, Jeffersonville, Zionsville. Teams earn point for each match that one of its players wins; the team title is determined by the team with the most points.
In other first-round matches, CN junior Kevin Lin, sophomore Joey Zhao and senior Akshaya Sabapathy fell in singles competition. Delta’s Jason Wegener beat Lin 6-1, 6-4 at No. 1 singles. Jasper’s Dawson Hopf topped Zhao 7-5, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. Jeffersonville’s Blake Winchell defeated Sabapathy 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 singles.
At No. 2 doubles, Guerin Catholic’s knocked off Bull Dogs senior Chris Ruble and sophomore Adam Saad 7-5, 6-0.
The final two rounds in the three-round event are Saturday (Aug. 19). The second round begins at 10 a.m.
