Bloomington South beats Columbus North 28-14 in JV football; Bull Dog freshmen fall 22-14

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Sophomore quarterback Jake Johnson accounted for four touchdowns Saturday (Oct. 7), including two in the fourth quarter, to lead the Bloomington South JV football team to a 28-14 victory over visiting Columbus North.

Johnson snapped a 14-14 deadlock with a 16-yard scoring strike to Chris Thomas early in the fourth quarter. Johnson then put the game away with a 33-yard touchdown later in the period.

Bloomington South took an early lead when Johnson passed 17 yards for a TD in the first quarter. Columbus North countered immediately, sophomore Zerek Greathouse returning the ensuing kickoff for a 73-yard touchdown.

The Panthers went ahead in the second quarter on a Johnson 23-yard run, but the Bull Dogs tied the game at 14 when junior Michael Johnson found the end zone on a 13-yard burst.

However, South’s Johnson responded with the two fourth-quarter scores to give the decision to the Panthers and cause the Bull Dogs to fall to 5-2 overall and 3-2 in Conference Indiana contests.

In Columbus, Mason David threw for two touchdowns and a pair of two-point conversions to lead the Bloomington South freshman team to a 22-14 triumph.

David connected with Joe Stephens on a 29-yard score and Jalen Peck on a 74-yard TD. He also hit Peck on the two successful conversions. Maddix Blackwell scored the Panthers’ other touchdown on a 7-yard run.

Blake Huffman produced a 56-yard touchdown dash and a two-point run for the Bull Dogs (6-2, 4-2). Hayden McDaniel also found the end zone on a 4-yard run for CN.

The Columbus North JV and freshman teams complete their seasons at 10 a.m. next Saturday (Oct. 14) against Southport. The JV hosts the Cardinals at Max Andress Field. The freshmen meet the Cardinals in Indianapolis.
