CN's Bailey, Harris, Finke finalize college commitments

Three Columbus North High School seniors took part in a college-bound student-athlete ceremony Wednesday (Dec. 20) to finalize their commitments for college athletics and academics.

The athletes participating in this ceremony were football players Tristan Bailey and J.D. Harris, as well as baseball player Tyler Finke. This was the first signing ceremony for the 2017-18 school year for athletes in the Class of 2018.

Bailey is headed for Illinois State for football, Harris to Northern Illinois for football and Finke to Snead State Community College in Alabama for baseball.

Bailey, a 6-4, 185-pound wide receiver, helped the Bull Dogs to a 9-2 season as a senior by making 40 receptions for 601 yards and eight touchdowns. His efforts gave Bailey two-year varsity totals of 65 receptions for 910 yards and 14 TDs. He was recognized as an honorable mention all-Conference Indiana selection as a senior. Bailey joins an Illinois State program that went 6-5 overall and 4-4 in the Missouri Valley Football Conference in 2017.

Harris, a 5-11, 170-pound cornerback, was chosen Class 6A first-team senior all-state by the Indiana Football Coaches Association following a season where he made 24 tackles, grabbed six interceptions for 101 return yards, and had nine passes broken up. In addition, the versatile athlete had 18 catches for 252 and two TDs as a receiver, averaged 27.0 yards on nine kick returns, averaged 9.0 yards on 24 punt returns and tied a school record with a 96-yard kick return against Franklin Central.

In three varsity seasons, Harris set a school record with 14 interceptions for 215 return yards while also making 82 tackles, producing 24 PBUs and blocked one kick. In addition, Harris had 35 receptions for 553 yards and four TDs. He also averaged 10.5 yards on 42 punt returns. Harris also was chosen IFCA Class 6A first-team junior all-state in 2016, and he is a three-time all-Conference Indiana selection -- honorable mention as a sophomore and first team as a junior and senior.

Harris joins a Northern Illinois program that is 8-4 overall and 6-2 in the Mid-American Conference entering the Quick Lane Bowl against Duke on Dec. 26 in Detroit.

Finke, an infielder, is on track to be a four-year varsity letterman in baseball. He hit .394 with 34 runs, six doubles, two RBIs and a school record 38 stolen bases while earning first-team all-Conference Indiana accolades for a 17-13 squad in 2017. He also shared the team's Web Gem Award. As a sophomore, Finke hit a team-best .426 with three doubles and 11 RBIs for a 17-11 team. As a freshman, Finke shared team the team's best average at .419 with three doubles, 11 RBIs and was co-winner of the team's Big Stick Award as the Bull Dogs went 23-7. Finke joins a Snead State program that went 23-27 overall and 14-14 in the Alabama Community College Conference in 2017.
