Kelley, Bailey and Bull Dogs blast Jeffersonville 56-14 in Sectional 8 opener

COLUMBUS, Ind. – Junior Trenton Kelley threw for 182 yards and three touchdowns en route to tying a school record for touchdown passes in a season Friday night (Oct. 27), leading the Columbus North football team to a 56-14 victory over Jeffersonville in a Class 6A Sectional eight first-round game.

Senior Tristan Bailey also totaled 118 yards and three TDs on four receptions for the Bull Dogs (9-1), who earned a date in the sectional final at 7 p.m. next Friday (Nov. 3) at Center Grove. The Trojans (5-5) advanced with a 35-3 decision at Franklin Central.

On a rainy, cold night at Max Andress Field, Columbus North allowed the visiting Red Devils little chance by jumping to a 28-0 first-quarter advantage and eventually leading 42-0 before substituting liberally over the 21 minutes. Freshman Blake Huffman led five CN runners with 97 yards on 17 carries, while senior Cortez Bandy netted 54 yards on seven attempts and junior Michael Johnson had 45 yards on eight totes.

For the game, the Bull Dogs totaled 438 yards to just 188 yards for Jeffersonville. Kelley’s three TD passes gave him 25 for the season, tying the CN season mark set by Ryan Genth in 1989. Senior Jaylen Flemmons had two receptions to give him 54 for the season and 92 for his career. Flemmons’ season total is three shy of the CN season record of 57 set by Brandon Butler in 2006, and Flemmons’ career total tied the CN all-time mark set by Butler in 2005-06.

The Columbus North defense forced the Red Devils into a three-and-out on their first possession, senior J.D. Harris returning a punt 24 yards to give the hosts the ball on the Jeff 34. Kelley then hit Bailey for a 34-yard touchdown on the Bull Dogs’ first play from scrimmage.

After forcing the Red Devils into another three-and-out, Johnson scored on a 2-yard run with 7:12 left in the opening period to cap a six-play, 63-yard drive. A 36-yard Kelley-to-Preston Terrell pass put the ball in the red zone.

By quarter’s end, Kelley connected with Bailey and Flemmons on a pair of 10-yard TD passes for the 28-0 edge. The latter of those scores came after Harris grabbed his sixth interception of the season, returning the ball 42 yards to the Jeff 7. The pick pushed Harris’ CN career interception record to 14 and left him one shy of the school season record of seven shared by Eddie Hawes in 1974 and Louie Plumlee in 1976.

Kelley made it 35-0 at intermission when he sneaked in from the 1 with 3:13 left in the second quarter, then Bandy scored on a 6-yard run on the opening possession of the third quarter.

Jeffersonville got on the scoreboard when junior Isaac Hall passed 48 yards to freshman Aquan Terrell for a touchdown, but CN matched that when junior Dylan England passed to Bailey for a 41-yard score on a fourth-and-14 play with 4:00 to go in the third period.

Huffman burst 29 yards over the left side from the Jeff 30 early in the fourth quarter to set up his own 1-yard TD before the Red Devils closed the scoring with a Hall 2-yard sneak with 2:38 to go.

Next week, Columbus North will be seeking the program’s fifth sectional championship to go with crowns previously won in 1989, 2004, 2006 and 2007. Center Grove is chasing its seventh consecutive sectional title and the Trojans' 13th overall.
