Home of the Bull Dogs - where 37 state championships have been won!
INDIANAPOLIS – Junior Trenton Kelley rushed for two touchdowns and passed for another, senior Cortez Bandy ran for 113 yards and the Columbus North defense put together a sparkling performance as the Bull Dogs’ football team blanked Bloomington South 23-0 in Lucas Oil Stadium.
Kelley found the end zone on runs that covered 5 yards and 1 yard as well as a 17-yard pass to sophomore tight end Mitchel Collier, while Bandy carried 25 time for his game-high rushing output to earn game MVP honors as Columbus North improved to 7-1 overall and 5-1 in Conference Indiana.
But the unit that shined the brightest was the CN defense, which limited the Panthers (3-5, 2-4) to just 26 yards rushing, 92 yards of total offense and to just two first downs. In addition, sophomore Montez Mitchell forced a fumble that junior Langston Lunsford recovered to set up CN’s second touchdown, the defenders stopped BS for no gain on a fourth-and-1 situation on the Bull Dogs’ 11 early in the third quarter, sacked BS senior Gavin Yeskie five times and the defense forced the Panthers to punt nine times.
Junior Tay Wells sacked Yeskie three times, while senior Logan Abbott and Mitchell each sacked Yeskie once. Mitchell, senior Brigham Kleinhenz, senior Noah Earl and senior Nick Tungett each recorded one tackle for loss. Kleinhenz also broke up one pass.
For the game, Columbus North posted a 326-92 edge in total offense while producing 21 first downs and posting a 31:28-to-16:32 advantage in time of possession.
Kelley completed 19-of-33 passes for 184 yards while also running for 17 yards and the two scores on six attempts. Freshman Preston Terrell led the receivers with six catches for 67 yards, while senior Tristan Bailey grabbed five passes for 42 yards and senior Jaylen Flemmons had three catches for 25 yards.
Senior Kristian Pechac and sophomore Maveric Thiery each ran for 10 yards, while Yeskie threw for 66 yards on just 4-of-12 accuracy. Thiery paced the BS receivers with one catch for 46 yards.
Columbus North got on the scoreboard midway through the first quarter when senior Drew Wilson centered a 37-yard field goal to cap a six-play, 24-yard drive.
The Bull Dogs made it 10-0 late in the quarter when Kelley “sneaked” into the end zone from the 5. The score finished an 11-play, 82-yard march that included a 14-yard Kelley-to-Bandy completion, a 13-yard Kelley-to-Terrell connection and a Bandy 20-yard burst around left end.
On the next play from scrimmage, Mitchell caused Pechac to fumble and Lunsford recovered at the Panthers’ 22. Two plays after that, on the first play of the second quarter, Kelley hit Collier on a quick slant to the right and the tight end powered his way into the end zone for a 17-0 advantage.
Bloomington South threatened early in the third quarter when Yeskie completed his first pass of the game, a swing route to Thiery that turned into a 46-yard gain to the Bull Dogs’ 20 when he broke a couple of tackles. But after Pechac gained 3 yards, an incomplete and a 6-yard pass to Pechac, the senior running back was stopped about 2 inches shy of a first down.
The Bull Dogs later put together two more impressive drives to complete the contest.
The first began late in the third quarter, included 12 plays and covered 70 yard climaxed by a 1-yard Kelley sneak with 10:04 left in the game. A 12-yard Kelley-to-Flemmons pass and a 14-yard Kelley-to-Terrell connection were key plays on the drive.
The latter possession literally concluded the game, CN taking over with 9:06 remaining and running 15 plays – 14 rushes and one pass – for 44 yards while converting five first downs to run the clock out.
The shutout was the Bull Dogs’ third of the season, joining respective 41-0 and 49-0 triumphs over Franklin and Bloomington North.
Columbus North returns to action at 7 p.m. next Friday (Oct. 13) when it visits Southport (5-3, 5-1) in its final regular-season game. Bloomington South is back to the field at 7 p.m. next Friday when it hosts Perry Meridian (1-7, 1-5). Both are Conference Indiana games.
