Columbus North football to host Jeffersonville in first round of Sectional 8 on Oct. 27

The Columbus North football team now knows its postseason path.

Two days after beating Perry Meridian 55-7, the Class 6A No. 14 Bull Dogs (6-1) learned Sunday (Oct. 1) that they will host Jeffersonville (2-5) at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 27 in the opening round of Sectional 8. The other first-round game in Sectional 8 is 6A No. 6 Center Grove (3-4), last season’s state runner-up, at 6A No. 12 Franklin Central (6-1).

The CN-Jeffersonville winner will face the Center Grove-Franklin Central winner in the sectional final on Friday, Nov. 3. The Bull Dogs will be on the road no matter what in a sectional final game.

Sectional admission is $6 per person.

In last season's sectional, Columbus North defeated New Albany 52-6 and Center Grove beat Jeffersonville 62-6 in the first round. Center Grove then topped Columbus North 41-14 in the sectional final. Franklin Central was in a different sectional last season, falling 49-17 to Warren Central in the first round.

In Jeffersonville, the Bull Dogs are facing an opponent from the Hoosier Hills Conference – the same conference where rival Columbus East plays. The Red Devils have won four sectionals over the years (1987, 1991, 1998 and 2007). Those are the only postseason titles in Jeffersonville history.

Columbus North, a member of Conference Indiana, has won four sectionals and three regionals, the most recent of both in 2007. The Bull Dogs have no semistate titles or state titles.

Last Friday, Shaun Wimberly threw for three touchdowns and Kam Fuller ran for two as Jeffersonville lost 49-35 at New Albany. Wimberly finished by completing 15-of-21 passes for 252 yards, while Fuller ran 26 times for 173 yards. D’Andre Rutherford caught six passes for 96 yards and two TDs.

Wimberly had scoring strikes of 18 yards to Rutherford, 20 yards to Rutherford and 47 yards to Fuller. Fuller had touchdown runs that both covered 1 yard.

Jeffersonville coach Alfonzo Browning is 12-16 in third year with the Red Devils.

Junior quarterback Trenton Kelley leads the Columbus North offense with 1,644 yards and 19 touchdown passing while completing 106-of-163 attempts. Senior Jaylen Flemmons is CN’s top receiver with 43 catches for 859 yards and 12 touchdowns. Senior Tristan Bailey has 25 receptions for 347 yards and three scores.

Senior Cortez Bandy paces the ground game with 659 yards and 13 TDs on 130 carries. Junior Michael Johnson has added 153 yards on 32 carries, and Kelley has run for 96 yards on 25 attempts.

Senior linebacker Brigham Kleinhenz leads the CN defense with 101 tackles, including 12 tackles for loss and three sacks. Junior linebacker Tay Wells has added 62 tackles, while senior safety Damon Hunter Jr. has 59 tackles with seven TFLs. Senior cornerback J.D. Harris has a team-best five interceptions, while junior cornerback Langston Lunsford has two picks and Hunter, Wells and junior safety Jalen Paswater have one theft each.

As a team, Columbus North is sixth Class 6A in scoring with 39.14 points per game. The Bull Dogs are third in 6A in points allowed, 11.29, and are third in 6A in scoring margin (27.86).

Columbus North is 14th in the latest Sagarin Ratings with 90.17 points. Jeffersonville is 146th with 48.02 points. Center Grove is third with 99.38 points, and Franklin Central is 25th with 82.08 points.

Columbus North has won football sectionals in 1989, 2004, 2006 and 2007, all in Class 5A. It also claimed regional titles the last three of those seasons.
