12 Columbus North seniors finalize college plans in signing ceremony

        Twelve Columbus North High School seniors participated in a college-bound student-athlete ceremony on Wednesday (April 12) to finalize their commitments for college athletics and academics.
        Three baseball players, three football players, two men's basketball players and one athlete each in women's basketball, men's cross country, women's cross country/track and men's soccer took part in a ceremony in the Columbus North cafeteria.
        Two student-athletes signed to join NCAA Division I programs -- runner Rachel Brougher (Eastern Michigan) and basketball player Alex King (U.S. Military Academy).
        Other student-athletes who finalized college plans were baseball players Wade Rankin (Kankakee Community College), Kevin Thompson (Olney Central College) and Nolan Wetherald (Marietta); football players Tucker Payne (Wabash), Joseph Suverkrup (Hanover) and Mark Salle-Tabor (Hanover); basketball players Ashlyn Huffman (Cedarville) and Stephon Peters-Smith (Rochester); runner Justin Spoon (Asbury); and soccer player Sam LaVelle (Manchester).
        These 12 athletes give CNHS a total of 32 athletes in the Class of 2017 who have announced plans to pursue college athletics. Earlier, 20 athletes took part in signing ceremonies in November or February.
        More information about the athletes who took part in Wednesday's ceremony and their respective college choices follows:
    >> Rachel Brougher, women's cross country/track, Eastern Michigan: Placed 36th at state in cross country as a senior in 19:15.9 after finishing 30th as a freshman (18:56.1), 11th as a sophomore (18:18.5) and 11th as a junior (18:20.8). Also placed 24th at state in track as a junior in the 3,200 (11:39.71).  She joins an EMU cross country program that won the Mid-American Conference championship and placed ninth in the NCAA Championship last fall. The Eagles also won the 2016 MAC outdoor track crown.
    >> Ashlyn Huffman, women's basketball, Cedarville (Ohio): The 5-5 guard averaged 9.0 points, 2.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists as a senior for the 21-8 Bull Dogs. Was named first-team All-State and first-team Academic All-State by the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association and was a 2016 Junior All-Star. Huffman joins a Yellow Jackets' program that went 19-11 overall and 9-5 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference in 2016-17.
    >> Alex King, men's basketball, U.S Military Academy: The 6-8 forward averaged 18.3 points, 7.3 rebounds and 2.4 assists as a senior for 15-9 Bull Dogs. Named high honorable mention all-state by the Associated Press. King joins a Black Knights' program that went 13-19 overall and 6-12 in the Patriot League in 2016-17.
    >> Sam LaVelle, men's soccer, Manchester: Recorded one assist while playing mostly in the back as a senior for 15-6-1 Bull Dogs. He joins a Spartans' program that went 9-6-3 overall and 3-5-1 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference last fall.
    >> Tucker Payne, football, Wabash: The 5-9, 205-pound linebacker posted a team-high 99 tackles, including two tackles for loss, with one interception and three passes broken up last fall for 9-2 Bull Dogs. He was an honorable mention all-Conference Indiana selection. Payne joins a Little Giants' program that went 8-2 overall and 7-2 in the North Coast Athletic Conference.
    >> Stephon Peters-Smith, men's basketball, Rochester (N.Y.): The 6-7 forward averaged 4.0 points and 4.2 rebounds as a senior. Peters-Smith joins a Yellowjackets' program that went 24-5 overall and 10-4 in University Athletic Association league games.
    >> Wade Rankin, baseball, Kankakee (Ill.) Community College: Third baseman is hitting .250 with one double and four RBIs so far this season for 6-2 Bull Dogs. Hit .316 with 12 RBIs as a junior. He joins a Cavaliers' program that is 27-6 overall and 11-3 in NJCAA Region IV games through April 9 this spring. 
    >> Mark Salle-Tabor, football, Hanover: The 5-10, 160-pound kicker/punter converted 52-of-56 extra points and 7-of-11 field goals with a long of 40 yards as a senior. He also tied a school record with 10 FGs as a junior. Had 37.7 average with long of 56 yards on 22 punts as a senior. Salle-Tabor joins a Panthers' program that went 4-6 overall and 4-4 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference last fall.
    >> Justin Spoon, men's cross country/track, Asbury (Ky.): Placed 120th at state in cross country as a senior in 17:16.8 and was 105th at state as a junior in 16:37.2. He joins an Eagles' program that was second last fall in the River States Conference.
    >> Joseph Suverkrup, football, Hanover: The 6-4, 220-pound defensive end notched 43 tackles with six tackles for loss and three sacks as a senior. He was chosen IFCA Academic All-State. Suverkrup joins a Panthers' program that went 4-6 overall and 4-4 in the HCAC last fall.
    >> Kevin Thompson, baseball, Olney Central (Ill.) College: First baseman-pitcher is hitting .417 with one double and six RBIs so far this season for 6-2 Bull Dogs. He is 1-0 with a 1.75 ERA and six strikeouts in eight innings pitched. He joins a Blue Knights' program that is 27-4 overall and 10-0 in the Great Rivers Athletic Conference through April 4 this spring.
    >> Nolan Wetherald, baseball, Marietta (Ohio): Catcher is hitting .167 with three RBIs so far this season for 6-2 Bull Dogs. Hit .333 with eight RBIs as a junior. He joins a Pioneers' program that is 9-10 overall and 4-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference through April 9 this spring.
