Whiteland girls basketball edges Columbus North 62-54 in overtime

                WHITELAND, Ind. – Senior Mackenzie Blazek scored six of her game-high 25 points in overtime Tuesday evening (Jan. 23), lifting the Whiteland girls basketball team to a 62-54 decision over visiting Columbus North.

                Junior Megan Harlow added 11 points for the Warriors, who improved to 18-4 for the season. Junior Taylor Klenner and sophomore Toni Joyner each chipped in seven points for the hosts.

                Senior Jenna Borger and sophomore Tessa Lomax shared team honors with 13 points apiece for the Bull Dogs (16-6). Junior Nadia Lomax contributed 10 points, and senior Kenzie Patberg had seven points.

                Blazek scored five points and junior Natalie Stuck netted four points in the first quarter as Whiteland took an 18-12 lead. Nadia Lomax scored six points and Borger tallied five points in the second quarter as CN cut its deficit to 30-27 at intermission.

                Borger scored five points and senior Liz Tynan had four points as the Bull Dogs drew even at 41 at the third stop. Tessa Lomax and Harlow each scored six points in the fourth quarter, CN tying the game at 54 late in the period on a 3-pointer by Kelsey Patberg. Whiteland had a chance to win in regulation, but it was able to convert a last-second shot off an inbound play.

                In the overtime, Blazek converted a traditional three-point play, three additional free throws and Joyner sank two free throws as the Warriors outscored the Bull Dogs 8-2 for the victory.

                In the JV game, freshman Alexa McKinley scored 16 points and sophomore Kaylyn Bates provided nine points as Columbus North claimed a 57-30 triumph. Sophomore Riley Eder and freshman Hannah Bramlett each added six points for the Bull Dogs (18-1). Freshman Gracie McCullars led Whiteland with 10 points.

                There was no freshman game.

                Columbus North returns to action on Thursday (Jan. 25) when it hosts Roncalli for the Bull Dogs’ Senior Night in Memorial Gym. The JV game begins at 6 p.m., and the varsity game will follow at about 7:30 p.m. CN will recognized six seniors between the games – players Borger, Tynan, Kat Norman, Kelsey Patberg and Kenzie Patberg, plus manager Cassidy Satterfield.

                The Columbus North freshman team plays at 6 p.m.. Wednesday (Jan. 24) against Bishop Chatard.
