Columbus North, Northwestern, Center Grove, Mooresville win first-round games in Subway/CN Invitational

                COLUMBUS, Ind. – Sophomore Tessa Lomax scored 13 points to lead three players in double figures Thursday evening (Dec. 28), helping the Columbus North girls basketball team to a 57-33 victory over Beech Grove in the first round of the Subway/Columbus North Invitational.

                Senior Jenna Borger added 12 points and junior Nadia Lomax had 10 points for the host Bull Dogs, who improved to 11-2 for the season. Senior Liz Tynan chipped in six points, and sophomore Annie Anderson tallied four points.

                Senior Katie Giller scored nine points and classmate Cameron Cardenas netted eight points for the Hornets (9-3).

                In other first-round games, Northwestern knocked off Evansville North 65-40, Center Grove defeated Terre Haute North 63-16 and Mooresville edged Elkhart Central 43-37.

                Sophomore Madison Layden tossed in 20 points to pace four players in double figures for Northwestern (14-1). Junior Taylor Boruff provided 13 points, while sophomore Kendall Bostic and junior Stephanie Burns each had 12 points for the Tigers. Senior Fredrionna Adams netted a team-best 16 points and sophomore Kenna Hisle scored 11 points for Evansville North (11-2).

                Senior Cassidy Hardin tallied 19 points to propel Center Grove (11-2) to its victory. Sophomore Claire Rake chipped in 11 points and junior Emma Utterback had 10 points for the Trojans. Junior Quincey Klingerman, junior Andrea Kearschner and senior Kaitlyn Hankins each scored four points for Terre Haute North (3-12).

                Junior Elise Scaggs tallied nine points while junior Lauren Farb and sophomore Paige Gregory each scored eight points to lift Mooresville (8-6). Junior Trinitee Harris scored 16 points to pace Elkhart Central (10-6).

                On Friday (Dec. 29), Beech Grove faces Evansville North and Terre Haute North plays Elkhart Central in 10 a.m. consolation semifinals. Those games are followed by Columbus North against Northwestern and Center Grove versus Mooresville at 11:45 a.m. in the championship semifinals.

                The 10 a.m. losers play for seventh place at 3:30 p.m. The 10 a.m. winners meet for fifth place at 3:30 p.m. The 11:45 a.m. losers square off for third place at 5:15 p.m. The 11:45 a.m. winners play for the championship at 7 p.m.
