Traylor, Artesians knock off Columbus North 50-39 in girls basketball

                COLUMBUS, Ind. – Senior Kayana Traylor scored 18 points Friday evening (Nov. 10), leading the Martinsville girls basketball team to a 50-39 victory over Columbus North in Memorial Gym.

                Senior Jessica Nix chipped in six points for the Class 4A No. 13 Artesians, who improved to 2-1 for the young season. Senior Meredith Deckard, junior Gracie Johnson and freshman Pa’Shence Walker each contributed five points for the winners.

                Sophomore Tessa Lomax scored 12 points to pace the 4A No. 14 Bull Dogs (1-1). Senior Jenna Borger tallied nine points, while senior Kenzie Patberg netted six points and junior Nadia Lomax had five points.

                Traylor scored five points and senior Christina Alexander scored four points as Martinsville used a late first-quarter burst for a 16-8 edge at the first stop. But Borger scored five points and Nadia Lomax tallied three points as CN pulled to within 23-20 at intermission.

                The Bull Dogs took the lead briefly on two Tessa Lomax free throws early in the third quarter, but Traylor and Nix each countered with four points and the Artesians led 36-31 at the third stop. The visitors maintained their lead early in the final period, then spread the floor and hit 5-of-7 free throws down the stretch to seal the decision.

                In the JV game, sophomore Sierra Norman scored 10 points to lead the Bull Dogs to a 60-32 decision. Sophomore Riley Eder and freshman Alexa McKinley each provided nine points, and sophomore Kaylyn Bates had eight points for CN (2-0). Walker led the Artesians with 11 points.

                Columbus North returns to action on Tuesday (Nov. 14) when it visits Southport for its first Conference Indiana contest of the season. JV and freshman games begin at 6 p.m. The varsity follows the JV at about 7:30 p.m.
