Howard-Bass, Guy help East girls prevail in HBCA All-Star Classic

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Columbus North seniors Maliah Howard-Bass and Imani Guy helped their East team prevail on Sunday (April 2) in the HBCA All-Star Classic.

Howard-Bass scored 13 points while adding three rebounds and four assists, and Guy contributed eight points, five rebounds and two blocks as the East girls outlasted the West 86-81 in the Bloomington North gym.

The event is staged by the Hoosier Basketball Coaches Association and features seniors from schools in the southern half of the state split into East and West teams.

Kami Owens of Austin scored 18 points to pace four players in double figures for the East girls. Paige Barrett of Scottsburg chipped in 14 points, while Kayla Bowling of Jac-Cen-Del netted 10 points for the winners. Hannah Schloemer of East Central tallied seven points, Taylor Drury of Eastern (Pekin) had six points, and Kaitlyn Howe of Rushville and Carly Allen of Crawford County scored four points apiece.

Erinn Hodges of Evansville Central was named game MVP after she poured in a game-high 28 points for the West. Brenna Maikranz of Wood Memorial added 12 points and Shelby Louden of Forest Park tallied 10 points. Calie Garland of Washington had eight points, while Serenah Morris of Edgewood, Ashley Durall of Sullivan and Jessica Kahle of Northeast Dubois each scored five points.

The East ran to a 34-19 about two-thirds of the way through the first half, but the West rallied to trail just 42-40 at intermission. The East jumped ahead 55-44 early in the second half, but the West came back for a brief lead at 58-57. However, the East reclaimed its edge and held on the rest of the way for the narrow victory.

Maikranz had a 3-point attempt in the final 10 seconds that could have tied the game, but the East rebounded and Barrett sank two free throws to clinch the outcome.

In the boys’ game, Isaac Hibbard of New Albany earned MVP honors by scoring a game-high 26 points as the East rolled to a 153-85 triumph with a balanced effort.

Nine players scored in double figures for the East, including Cody Waskom of Brownstown Central with 22 points, Jordan Knoebel of Charlestown with 21 points, Seth Hobson of Salem with 19 points and Mitchell Meagher of Scottsburg with 19 points. Also, Carson Lambring of Brownstown Central scored 14 points, Travis Roehling of Center Grove netted 12 points, and Grant Smith of Connersville and Michael Valle of Whiteland each had 10 points.

Together, the East boys combined for 20 3-point goals.

Daulton Blackwell of Mitchell tallied 23 points to lead three West boys in double figures. He was joined by Josh Hall of Bloomington South with 22 points and De’Ante Booker of Evansville Harrison with 12 points.

Howard-Bass and Guy were the seventh and eight Columbus North girls to play in the HBCA All-Star Classic in the past five years. They joined Hanna Ballard (2013), Kelsey Cunningham (2014), Debie Gedeon (2015), Sheyanne Street (2015), Paige Littrell (2016) and Elle Williams (2016).

CN senior Ashlyn Huffman also was picked to play in the 2017 game, but she was unable to accept the invitation.
