Howard-Bass honored as MVP of 2016-17 Columbus North girls basketball

Columbus North senior Maliah Howard-Bass was named MVP of the Bull Dogs’ 2016-17 girls’ basketball team at the team awards program Thursday evening (March 30).

Howard-Bass, a four-year varsity letterwinner, averaged 16.9 points, 4.4 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 3.3 steals while leading the team to a 21-8 record that included Conference Indiana, sectional and regional championships. She was one of six players to receive special presentations in the season-ending gathering held in the CN cafeteria.

Seniors Ashlyn Huffman and Imani Guy, juniors Jenna Borger and Kelsey Patberg, and sophomore Peyton Fleetwood also were recipients of special awards for a Bull Dogs’ squad that finished its season among the final four of Class 4A for the third consecutive season.

Huffman was named winner of the Bull Dog Award, while Guy was presented the Senior Award. Borger was the recipient of the Most Improved Award, and Patberg was voted the winner of the Spirit Award.

Fleetwood was the recipient of the Martha Kalb Memorial Award, which goes to a JV player who displays characteristics of determination, teamwork, persistence and heart.

Huffman averaged 9.0 points, 2.5 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.2 steals, while Guy contributed 9.5 points, 6.8 rebounds, 1.7 steals and 3.3 blocks.

Borger tallied 5.2 points and 2.7 rebounds while shooting 46 percent from 3-point territory (23-of-50), and Patberg provided an emotional lift in the locker room and on the bench despite being unable to play in games because of a late-summer knee injury.

Fleetwood averaged 3.1 points and 1.3 rebounds while shooting 46 percent on 3-pointers for a 17-2 JV team.

The Columbus North “C Team” finished its season with a 17-1 record. Collectively, the CN teams went 55-11.

Several CN players have been honored with previous awards, including three Bull Dogs being named All-State by the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association – Howard-Bass and Huffman to the first team and Guy to the second team.

Howard-Bass also was chosen to the 2017 Indiana All-Star team and the 2017 IBCA/Subway Senior Supreme 15. Guy was picked to the 2017 IBCA/Subway Senior Large School All-State Team, and Huffman was selected 2017 IBCA/Subway Senior Honorable Mention All-State.
